Time to roll again!
Monday, 18 July 2011 03:48    | Written by MJ     E-mail

The last long distance trip brought us from North Dakota to Nevada, and back again. The scenery we've seen, the people we've met, the weather, roads, mountains, canyons, the USA has some epic territories. So, it's clearly time to saddle up again and hit the road for another long distance trip! (The small fry trips here at home, generally just shy of 300 miles, don't qualify for "long distance")

Where to this time? Basically, the idea is to go from up top, to the bottom. From Fargo, ND, to Sierra Vista, AZ.

The round trip will be roughly 4000 miles again. However, this time we're starting separately. I will be leaving Fargo on Tuesday late night, and attempt to accomplish a Bunburner Gold. The BB Gold is flagged by the IBA - Iron Butt Association, an association comprised of long & ultra long distance riders, as an "Extreme" undertaking. The Challenge; 1500 miles in under 24 hours. This is some serious mileage, with mostly highway to be ridden - speed is key. Within the speed limits, of course, but when you do the simple math, the BB Gold means: 75mpH for 20hrs, leaving 4 hrs for fuel stops, short breaks, food, restrooms, etc.

There's not much time to be lost, or the efforts to accomplish this "extreme" challenge are foiled. However, if it shouldn't work out, I'd immediately drop into the next category, the "regular" BunBurner; 1500 miles in 36hrs.

Seeing as I've done a SS1000 - SaddleSore 1000 (1k miles/24hrs) just last year, adding another 500 miles in 24hrs, is an accomplishable task. Let's see how it goes.

If you'd like to follow along, please bookmark this site, and you can see the GPS Tracker following me throughout the entire trip. Also, I'll be "Tweeting" during fuel stops and other breaks - might as well follow @adrenalinc as well. ;) And while I'm already at the whole following thing, why don't you just add me on Facebook also: www.facebook.com/jahnl

My route will be posted in the next update here. So, if you happen to be on the road, and you'll see me rolling by, take a snapshot with your camera, or give me a gentle wave,...with more than one finger, ...or have a (QUICK!) chat with me at a rest area/gas station.

See ya on the road!

Mike

Towards the end of August, it's time to hit the road again. This time, the tour might lead us from North Dakota to Maine to Arizona and back to North Dakota. Roughly 4500 miles, or more - depending on detours, planned and unplanned.

Riding the BMW R1200GS Adventure - and comparing it to the Kawasaki Concours 14

There are a few motorcycles that have always been "itching" me. The itch to test them, ride them, run them through their paces - as much as I could anyways without actually owning them - best completed through "test rides" I got in contact with Tyler, one of the sales reps at Moon Motorsports in Monticello. Since it's only 200 Miles to Monticello, MN and Moon Motors is the closest "local" BMW dealership, the path was pre determined. A quick phone call ahead, a quick chat later and Tyler confirmed that there are 2 BMW R1200GS Adventures on hand, one of them ready to be taken out for a test ride.

Quo Vadis? (images to http://adrenalinc.com/trip-reports.html)

Every once in a while, it’s not you why chooses the path of travel, but the weather gods above you.

Starting with a hearty 90 minute delay, Fargo was left behind the rear wheel, the front wheel pointed at Bismarck, ND. For the majority, it was an uneventful ride. What else to expect? After all, the landscape was provided by North Dakota. Flatlands as far as the eye can see, we just don’t believe in putting a lot of hills, mountains or trees in place, in order not to obstruct your view.
